Hope Shelter – A look back at 2021
In 2021, the shelter, a safe house for women, was renovated, the interior rooms were painted and all facilities opened for operation. Thanks to a contract with the government, the buildings can be used rent-free for over 10 years. The project partners, the German Doctors, have expanded the offer around the fight against female genital mutilation themed “My body, my right”. The staff at both locations has now grown to a total of 50 people.
Of course, most of the project’s achievements cannot be expressed in figures. Nevertheless, numbers should give a little insight into how many lives are touched here.
The HOPE Shelter helped 128 girls and their 129 Babies at two locations last year. In Makeni, 77 mothers and 78 babies were cared for; in Bo, 51 mothers and 51 babies sought the shelter’s help. In 15 cases, a Caesarean section was necessary to save the young mothers. Unfortunately, despite all efforts, two mothers and five babies passed.
Your donation is helping to give sexually abused girls a way back to a normal life and gives their babies a fair start.
